How amazing ! The house was completed on the 26th August and a completion ceremony followed that included Monks doing a blessing lost of food for all of the surrounding families and celebrations. To add to the celebrations, it was Ricks birthday, so they had a wonderful time.
Rick also wired the house with Mr Narrat so the family also has electricity. This has filled the families heart with hope. They keep standing back and just staring at the house in disbelief that people from another country would care enough to do this for them. As they have always lived in very bad housing where they have been susceptible to many diseases, having a home that is safe and dry has changed everything for them, no more sleepless wet nights in the rainy season, cool days under their home and the lifting of their spirits by having a nice home to come to. Happy Hub donated, foam mattresses for the family (they were sleeping on the floor), mosquito nets and a water filter system to ensure they have clean drinking water. Qantas staff at Brisbane airport donated a water well that will be used by all the villagers. Grace Lutheran College donated a latrine with a washroom that all of the families can use. Words cannot express how much this means to the family and the villagers. Thank you so much.

Day 1 of the house construction, and as you can see, even building a house in Cambodia is a family affair and fun. The Kids did the painting, all blue of course. I think blue paint must be the cheapest colour in Cambodia :)))
After a lunch break and ice block break for the kids, it was time to finish the framing. The family are so excited to see their new house coming to life. Rick got things happening quickly with the house and headed to town to get all the materials needed. As you can see most of the village came out to help with unloading the timer and concrete poles. After clearing and levelling the land next to the families old house, it was time to get building.
Rick meet with Mr Narrat, who has an Electrical business that is willing to partner with the apprenticeship program. Narrat will be managing the training and on job learning. he will be updating us with progress of the apprentice with reports and photos, as well as any concerns he may have.
Narratt will conduct private lessons for 6 hours every Monday and Friday in a classroom environment, hands on training 3 days a week, using different types of switchboard set ups, and hands on cable installing, repairing, maintenance of electrical wiring, lighting fixtures, electricity- distribution equipment. Rick will of course oversee the project to ensure that it is compliant and run properly. Rick has negotiated for the first house to be built at a village near Huet , outside of Siem Reap. Rick has confirmed that land titles are correct and has received approval from the village chief. The mother and father are hard working and have 3 beautiful boys. Due to very low wages the family have been living in a run down house that is leaving the family open to disease due to it not being water proof.
Construction will begin the week beginning 21/8/17. We will post updates as it is progresses. , and look
Thanks to the amazing people at the Lighthouse Group, we have been able to implement an apprenticeship program in Cambodia that will enable disadvantaged youth from remote villagers who are at risk to learn construction skills that will provide employment for them. We have set up not only a construction, but also an electrical apprenticeship program. This program will be overseen by Rick Garson who is a qualified builder that has been building houses for the disadvantaged villagers in Cambodia since 2002. For more information about Rick go to www.projectscambodia.com Happy Hub Kampot representatives attended the annual Lighthouse Ball to collect their very generous $5,000.00 donation to kick start the program and build a house for a very deserving family. We would like to give a special thanks to Rhiann for giving Happy Hub Kampot this opportunity, and we look forward to working with all of the Lighthouse Club in the future to provide an on going and successful program. |
